The Sleeping Legion by JR Handley

A century ago, all but two members of Lance Scipio’s unit were executed. He has been woken into a strange new time, and tasked with whipping into shape the worst squad of misfits in the entire Human Marine Corps. The price of failure is death – no pressure!

2565AD. Tranquility-4 near the frontier of the White Knight Empire. Guided by mysterious orders, the authorities at the Human Marine Corps base of Beta City thaw Lance Scipio. In 2441, an entire Marine company was executed with the exception of Captain Grimgerde and Sergeant Lance Scipio, the usual punishment for running in the face of the enemy. But these two were preserved… as if they would be required in the future.

Although Scipio is not expected to escape execution for long, he has been given a slim chance. For a Marine, a chance is all that is needed to change the fate of worlds. This entertaining tale takes many twists and turns as Scipio not only turns this band of misfits into first class marines, but also teaches them forgotten tactics making them a force to be reckoned with.

The Sleeping Legion is a breakneck new sequence of military science fiction novels set in the worlds of the international bestselling series: ‘The Human Legion’.

Ep 2.46 - TNL - Better Space Battles with MD Cooper

June 14, 2017

Amazon Author Bio:

“I look at the night skies, at the stars and planets, and I dream of what will someday be humanity’s home. I imagine a future where we have stretched out into the stars, discovering new worlds, and new beauty. These dreams have come to life in the series of books coming to life in the world of Aeon 14.

When I began writing about a distant future—in the 42nd century—a woman named Tanis showed up. Her strength and drive took over my stories and I couldn’t help but write about her. Tanis lives in a future where there is no faster than light travel and no teleporters. However, humans have created structures as large as moons, and have shifted planets. They share their minds with AI and talk to one another almost telepathically.

Yet they are still human, they still laugh, and tell tall tales, and love one another.

The Aeon 14 series contains four books, with the fifth coming in the spring of 2017. Join the journey and see what the future may have in store for us.

Ep 2.45 - LIVE! with C Steven Manley

June 12, 2017

C.Steven Manley--or just 'Chuck' to most folks--has lived the bulk of his life collecting skills and experiences that have made him into something resembling a human Swiss Army Knife. He spent his youth on the wrong side of most tracks and always going places he was told not to. He survived a dramatic childhood before he joined the United States Air Force where he learned about airplanes, electronics, and self-discipline. From there, his life was a series of successes and misadventures that led him into a variety of jobs including cruise control transducer tester, engineering test technician, door to door jewelry salesman, mental health care worker, obesity skin care technician, Cardiovascular Technologist, and, finally, stay at home dad and writer.

He's been writing since he was eight and has no intention of stopping regardless of whether or not anyone reads his brain-sweat. He enjoys RPG gaming, cooking, and hiking. He lives in Alabama despite being something of a traditional southern culture infidel.

Like most everyone else in the world, he can be found on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Check out www.cstevenmanley.net where you can read his occasionally updated blog and sign up for his spam free mailing list.”

Ep 2.44 - TNL - Multiple Series Entry Points w/ Joshua Dalzelle

June 5, 2017

Blog By Lauren Moore

Contemplating starting your own writing career? Already took the plunge but are concerned about low sales numbers? Tonight’s episode is for you. Tonight we were joined by Joshua Dalzelle, USA TODAY bestselling author and Amazon Top Ten science fiction author of The Black Fleet Trilogy, The Expansion Wars Trilogy, and the Omega Force series. As of June 2017, Josh has sold over 750,000 copies and in this episode, he shares with us his story of how he went from discovering self-publishing in 2012 to selling copies like Rita’s on a boiling-hot summer’s day.

So what’s his secret? It’s nothing new: the man writes what he loves and is open to expanding his universe. Inspired by casts of quirky characters like the A-Team, all of the epic drama of Star Wars, and the fun of sci-fi series like Firefly, Josh wrote what would become his first published book, Omega Rising. But before he hit ‘Send’ on the publishing button, he changed the ending to allow that single novel to be turned into a series. As his readers ate up the Omega Force series, he used that same winning formula of Quirky Characters + Epic Drama + Lots of Fun to create two new series, The Black Fleet Trilogy and The Expansion Wars.

So, that’s it? Write what you love and you too can sell 750,000 copies? Well, as he shares his story, Josh bestows a few gems of wisdom that any author can use immediately in their writing career. In particular, he shares his strategies for marketing, dealing with reader reviews, building your plots, and improving your writing craft. All of his suggestions are simple, effective, and ones that you can implement today.

But don’t take our word for it. Check out tonight’s episode and listen to the complete interview for yourself.

Find the show notes below!

Updates:

  • Scott Moon:

    • Battling insomnia, but not necessarily because he started listening to Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan
    • Joshua Dalzelle:
      • Passed the 10k-word mark on the newest Black Fleet book
    • Josh Hayes:

Josh Dalzelle’s Story:

  • Wrote throughout school, joined the military (Air Force). Tried to submit manuscripts to agents and publishers but got rejected.
  • 2012, got a Kindle and discovered ebooks and ebook publishing.
  • Wrote Omega Rising in 11 months; it came out in Jan. 2013. Ended up changing the ending so it could become part of a series.
  • Wrote nine books in the Omega Force series.
  • Brian Keene read Omega Rising and wrote a really nice review that ended up boosting sales a lot.
  • Did not do much social media marketing at the beginning other than…
    • Facebook author page
    • Twitter page
    • Small (6k) mailing list--small but active and unsolicited
    • Included links to the mailing list and books at the end of his ebooks

  • Black Fleet

    • Book 9 had the biggest release (despite common wisdom about writing only a 3-5 book series)
    • Tried to hook readers in the first three books for the rest of the series
  • Black Fleet ended up outselling Omega Force 3-to-1
  • As of today, he has hundreds of reviews, including Warship which has over 1,400 reviews
    • Used to get some really difficult reviews, so he stopped reading them
    • Even with the really positive ones, he finds them not that helpful to read
    • Has never asked for reviews

-    Josh Dalzelle and Scott share their favorite 1-star reviews

-    The Expansion Wars is the sequel series to Black Fleet

   - Uses the same universe, but whole new story arcs

-     Audiobook publisher (Podium) came to him with an offer--much to his audience’s delight

-     Writing Tips

-     If you’re making a series, you need to take notes on names, places, dates, etc., to keep track of everything

-     Keep track of the beats and match your scenes and beats to a basic plot chart so the plot works out well together

-     When you write two series with overlapping events, you need to keep close track on all the events. So something mentioned in one series may be developed further in the other.

-    Writes in Word but does use Scrivener to keep notes

-    Works hard with his editor using Track Changes.

  • Questions:

    • Favorite secondary character? Lots of fun secondary characters
    • Thoughts on anthologies for newer authors? (JR Handley asked) Yes--he got in anthologies that helped him get onto the USA Today bestselling list
    • What does your writing schedule look like? Gets up and going around 8 AM to get that first 1k words out by 10:30 AM. Takes a break. Hammers more out to get 3-5k words out by the end of the day. After that, there comes a point of diminishing returns…
    • What’s the most military-based joke you’ve worked into a novel? (Richard Fox asked)
    • Where do you get your inspiration for all your writing? (Johnny Kanuk asked) All of life goes into it. Cool scenes hit me from life.
    • What have you done to improve your craft? (Ken Lozito asked) Never think that you know everything. Right now, he’s enrolled in Clark Chamberlain’s “Punch Them in the Gut” writing course. It’s helping him to build more dynamic characters and more powerful stories.
    • Is there something that you know now that you’d do if you were just starting out? Don’t be shy--just reach out to people if you need help. Don’t make the mistakes of having a crappy cover, blurb, and editing job for your first book. Invest in it.

Ep 2.42 - The Art of Selling Paperbacks with Scott Bartlett

June 5, 2017

Blog Post:

By Lauren Moore

No matter where you are in your indie author career, tonight’s topic is tangibly relevant: selling copies--in particular, print books. So whether you are a self-published veteran selling copies by the thousands, a would-be author still planning out your writing career, or somewhere in between, this episode is for you.

Tonight’s guest is Scott Bartlett, a Sci-Fi indie author who writes with humor, wit, and pizzazz. And by “pizzazz,” we mean galactic battles, epic heroes, ancient prophecies, compelling characters, and loads of cliffhangers. What’s not to love? His The Ixan Prophesies and Unable to Die series have sold stacks of copies, making him a beloved author for his many fans and on the Sci-Fi Bridge author community.  But he didn’t start out selling hundreds of copies. He started out selling them one by one at a farmer’s market. Curious about how he got to where he is now and what practical marketing lessons he learned along the way?

Take a listen to tonight’s show.

 Announcements:

  • Terrye Toombs, KSM fan, released her first book today, The Reluctant Emissary

      • Joined the bomb squad
      • Working on his super-secret project
      • The superhero anthology he’s a part of with Steve Beaulieu is coming out for preorder

Scott Bartlett Bio:

  • Has been writing since 15 yrs. old
  • Has written dystopian cyberpunk and dystopian satire. Writes a lot of military sci-fi and space opera.
  • First started selling his medieval comedy novel, Royal Flush, through in-person, local print book sales.
  • scottplots.com
  • Get the entire Unable to Die series for free by checking out Scott Bartlett's Readers' Group! Just copy/paste this website into your address bar: scottplots.com/books-giveaway

 Selling Paperbacks:

  • Selling in-person and local

    • Used Lightning Source originally but now uses IngramSpark to print books.
    • If you can, order your print books in bulk (IngramSpark starts at 150 copies and goes up from there) to get lower prices.
    • Start with a publishing fund to finance bulk prices and then replenish it with your sales.
    • Scott saved up his money as much to finance his authorial career.
    • Started out selling at his local farmer’s market and spread out to other farmer’s markets, Christmas craft fairs, and every Sci-Fi convention around
    • Research local events to see what events are available, which books they might be interested in, and about how many books might be sold there
    • Figure out how to effectively pitch your books to particular audiences
    • The power of a great opening line! It becomes part of your pitch when you’re selling your book in person. Example: Taking Stock: “Sam met me in the middle of committing suicide.”
    • Have an opening line for talking to people one-on-one. Even something as simple as, “Hey, are you a book reader?” or “Do you read Sci-Fi?”--something to start the conversation.
    • Realize it is okay to sell yourself and your books. People expect that and indeed are looking for it. You believe in your book; you wrote it because you think it IS fun and/or valuable. You are helping people by connecting them with your book.
    • “You become the blurb.” - KSM fan, Kalene Williams
    • Have your one-sentence tagline and/or elevator pitch (based on the plot/characters) ready, BUT be ready to improvise.
    • Selling in person is really selling a “memory, an experience, a meaningful connection between book lovers” - Scott Bartlett
    • Selling Non-fiction in person:
      • Pick your venue carefully so it matches your topic
  • Marketing Online

    • Know your genre
    • Get a great cover that fits in with the top books in your genre
    • You need a blurb and tagline that sing
    • Your book description needs to hit your genre keywords, and have them as close to the top of the description as possible--while being true to your book and creating intrigue.
    • Example: Sci-Fi Keywords--“Galaxy,” “aliens,” “allies,” “ship”
    • Figure out what it is about particular genres that people love and then make sure your book has that--and that you hit on it in your book description, blurb, etc.

Eager for more tips on selling books in person? You came to the right man--because he wrote the book on the subject. You can find Scott on his website, scottplots.com, on Sci-Fi Bridge, and on Amazon.
